Dock & Carpentry Shops
The carpenter shop is capable of handling any finish carpentry work including sheet, cabinetry, bulkhead, inside and outside for all types of marine vessels. The equipment provided to perform the above work includes manual and pneumatic, joiners, planers, drill presses, and table saws as well as a wide range of hand tools. Shop equipment includes table saw, band saws, planers and oscillating sanders.

Electrical Shop
We provide marine and industrial electrical installations, troubleshooting and repairs with a wide range of expertise that includes: Switchboard repair and cleaning; Crane, motor and generator repair, replacement and overhaul, Controller and power distribution system installation, repair and cleaning; Alarm systems; Navigation panels; Automatic buss transfers; engine order telegraph (propulsion control) systems; Steering systems; CHT systems; HVAC systems; Transducer replacement; Machinery controller installation repair and overhaul, and vessel re-powering, using owner or contractor supplied equipment. Electrical engineering design/analysis is supplied by a subcontractor. The reconditioning of motors, rewinding of armatures and stators, testing and overhaul of electronic and navigation equipment are subcontracted to the OEM or numerous specialty subcontractors.

Fabrication Shop
With a full staff of highly skilled welders and ship fitters, Lyon Shipyard provides the highest quality steel repair and fabrication possible to our customers. We perform rip out, alteration, repair and installation for ship’s hull and superstructure including hull plates, frame structure, metal deck plating and grating, hull fittings such as davits, cranes, fairleads, chocks, bollards, watertight doors, foundations, hatches, fittings, scuttles, sockets and deck rails. Equipment available includes, a UNC plasma cutter table capable of cutting up to 2″ mild steel in sheets of up to 8′ x 20′, 400 Ton press brake, plate roller with 1″ capacity, 1″ shear for plate up to 10′ wide, all the necessary equipment for shaping and fitting steel and aluminum plate, including chain falls, come-alongs, hydraulic jacks and other equipment to ensure proper fit.

Inside Machine Shop
Our inside machine shop has two fully equipped shops totaling over 15,000 square feet of workable shop space capable of manufacturing and reconditioning propulsion shafts to USCG and ABS standards and manufacturing a multitude of metal and other material parts for use aboard ship including special application parts that are no longer available. Shop equipment includes 3 Lincoln NA-5 subarc welders, capable of welding three shaft liners independently or all at the same time. The inside machine shop is home to the OMAX 80X Water Jet Machining Center with Intellix-Trax. This machine supports many of the trades within the yard and will cut wood, rubber, glass, ferrous and nonferrous metals up to 5 inches thick.

Z Drive Gear Box Repair Shop
In 2020 Lyon Shipyard built a state of the art climate controlled (Schottel certified) Z Drive and gear box repair shop. The Z Drive shop provides over 5300 sf of work space to disassemble, inspect and reassemble Z drive and gear box units. Being the first of its kind on the East Coast, Lyon Shipyard’s Z Drive production area is able to provide its customers the service to rebuild multiple marine thrusters and engines at once. A 45 ton over head crane is capable of rotating large gear boxes and engines safely and efficiently.
OEM trained mechanics work side by side with our Lyon Shipyard technicians. Partnering with our fully equipped inside machine shop gives us the ability to handle the entire repair and rebuild, completely in-house, while maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty specifications. After the rebuilds are complete, Lyon Shipyard can provide unit preservation and coating services as well as provide multiple warehouses and secured lay down area for storage of the completed units.

Outside Machine Shop
A full service outside machine shop: including complete power train alignments from main engine to gear box to shaft and everything in between, in-place boring for shaft alignment and multi bearing alignment. Shop capabilities include propeller removal and reinstallation, propulsion shaft removal and reinstallation, all facets of rudder and steering maintenance, overhaul and modification of hydraulic systems and pneumatic systems. We have performed repowering of tugboats, propulsion shaft seal conversions from packing to mechanical seal, maintenance and overhaul of all types of deck machinery from anchor windlasses to tow winches. Additionally, we successfully perform valve repairs and overhauls for all types and sizes, conduct oil and hydraulic system flushes to OEM standards. Finally, we regularly perform pump overhauls and repairs, keel cooler overhaul renewal, removal and installation, bow thruster repairs and replacement, fin stabilizer removal/repair and fitting of propellers to propulsion shafts.

Paint Shops
Lyon Shipyard’s full service marine paint shop’s are comprised of two separate departments. The shops are the Inside and Outside Paint Shops which are certified in NAVSEA basic paint inspection as well as a member of the Society of Protective Coatings. Lyon Shipyard, Inc. is SSPC-QP1 certified, as are several of our preservation subcontractors. Please contact Lyon Shipyard for our certification. Lyon Shipyard employs individuals in our QA and Paint Departments who are QP1 qualified and will be utilized for inspection of all critical coated surfaces.
The paint shops equipment includes a wheel-a-brator, a 60′ x 40′ sand blast shed capable of containing material or equipment up to 20′ tall, in which Lyon can use various methods of blasting including black beauty, garnet, walnut shell and other material. Additionally available is a 60′ x 40′ environmentally controlled paint booth capable of painting materials or equipment up to 20′ tall. Equipment used throughout Lyon Shipyard includes 4 movable abrasive pots, a 40,000 psi ultra-high pressure water blasting unit, multiple airless paint spray units, and hand and power tool equipment. Abrasive blasting and painting capabilities are available at all dry docks and railways.

Pipe Shop
Lyon Shipyard’s pipe shop is capable of fabrication and installation of all types of piping including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper nickel, nickel copper, PVC, and others. Shop equipment includes electric pipe threader up to 4″ , PVC bender, 5 ton overhead shop crane, GMAW welder, GTAW welder, SMAW welder, Hydraulic powered pipe bender up to 3″ sch 80.

Sheet Metal & Insulation Shop
Lyon Shipyard is capable of fabricating and installing all types of custom made products to serve both the commercial and government ship repair industry. We perform rip out, alteration, repair and installation of ventilation ducting, berthing and messing equipment, partitions, racks, shelving and bin storage, galley and refrigerated space equipment, joiner doors and bulkheads. Shop facilities include a 12ft shear which will allow our shop to use up to 1/4″ mild steel or up to 3/16″ stainless steel, 10ft Darley shear which cuts up to ¼” mild steel, 8ft Chicago hand brake which bends up to 14 gauge steel, 4ft Chicago finger brake which bends up to 14 gauge steel, 5ft Wysong shear which cuts up to 14 gauge, 4ft MSC roller, 3ft Pexto roller, 90 ton Pacific press brake, Pittsburg Lock former, Lock former easy edger. Other resources such and GTAW welding, GMAW welding, SMAW welding and a clean, crisp plasma cutter. Also available are numerous other rollers, brakes and spot welders.
Lyon Shipyard insulation shop is able to complete a wide variety of insulation jobs in a timely manner. We are experienced in the following areas: Machinery Insulation including removable insulation blankets fabricated in our shop with either fiberglass or silicone impregnated covering; Piping insulation of all sizes and types of material including Kalo or fiberglass, bulkhead and mat insulation. Insulation can be provided with protective covering including sheet metal or fiberglass.

Rigging & Crane Shop
Lyon Shipyard maintains the following certified cranes and forklifts which meet all of the customers heavy lift requirements as described; one 35 ton mobile rough terrain crane, one 50 ton mobile crane rough terrain, one 90 ton mobile crane rough terrain, one 110 ton mobile track crane, one 10 ton floating crane, one 110 ton floating crane, one 150 ton floating crane, and 5 forklifts with 6,000 to 9,000 pound capacities. In addition, we have access to a 90 ton rental floating crane. All operators and riggers receive monthly in-house safety training. Our rigging shop maintains a large variety of lifting cable and nylon slings rated up to 50 tons, as well as numerous clamps, shackles, and falls. With a minimum 4 hour notice, we can accommodate any customer lifting needs from any position on any of the vessels. We have unlimited capacity from rentals based on the customer’s needs.

Structural Shop
Lyon’s Welding department is capable of welding ferrous and nonferrous material using shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, oxygen-acetylene and resistance welding equipment. Equipment available includes multiple units of GTAW weld equipment, multiple units of GMAW weld equipment, multiple units of FCAW welding equipment, portable hand held plasma cutters, multiple units for SMAW welding equipment, Welders are qualified to NAVSEA, ABS and USCG standards.

Tech Weld Shop
The Tech Weld Shop serves several purposes within Lyon Shipyard. It is a technical training center that serves the employees of Lyon Shipyard, by teaching them how to weld various metals and certifying welders on aluminum, stainless steel mild steel, cooper nickel, and cast steel. The shop also teaches ARC gouging on butt welds and cracks.
The Tech Weld Shop also serves as an integral part of the yard by completing; main engines shaft repair work, welds rudders, repair and build up of rudders, repairs copper nickel keel coolers and completes cast iron repair work. The Tech Weld Shop also completes GTAW and GMAW welds on various metals, brass brazing and silver solder.
The Tech Weld Shop also supports the yard by completing weld inspections for the Structural Shop.
